Languages

Learning a language gives us a multitude of opportunities, including many different career opportunities!

It improves cognitive ability, as well as social skills, communication and confidence. Learning a language increases awareness of the world around you and to make you more open-minded to other people and their culture.

The National Curriculum for Languages aims to ensure that all children:

  • Understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources.
  • Are able to speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions, and that they are continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation.
  • Can write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt.
  • Discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in the language studied.

A high quality languages education should foster children’s curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world. We believe that the learning of a language provides a valuable educational, social and cultural experience for our pupils. It helps them to develop communication skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing, with an aim of making substantial progress in one language.

Accessing first quality teaching of French helps children develop skills that will open further opportunities later in life. The teaching of French at KS2 provides an appropriate balance of spoken and written language and lays the foundations for further foreign language learning at KS3. We believe that learning another language gives children a new and broader perspective on the world, encouraging them to understand their own cultures and those of others.

Languages at Pelton Community Primary School

The Languages Programme of Study for Key Stage 2 was used alongside the Key Stage 2 Framework for Languages to ensure our curriculum is progressive and fosters pupils’ curiosity and deepens their understanding of the world.

The languages subject leader has rigorously planned the curriculum cycles to ensure that pupils develop their skills in speaking, listening, reading, and writing French over time, regardless of their journey through the school. Each unit of work is identified within the following stages:

  • Early Language (E)
  • Intermediate (I)
  • Progressive (P)
  • Extra Teaching (X)

The curriculum across KS2 is planned on a two-year cycle, ensuring continuity, progression, and full coverage of the National Curriculum objectives.

Teachers use unit planning from the Language Angels resource to ensure high-quality delivery of the languages curriculum, incorporating engaging and age-appropriate activities. Medium-term plans outline clear learning outcomes and opportunities for assessment, ensuring that children build on prior learning and develop their confidence and competence in using French.

Languages Long Term Plan

Our French Trip

Pupils recently had the incredible opportunity to travel to France through the Turing Scheme, giving them a truly immersive cultural and educational experience. During their visit, they were challenged to use their growing language skills in real‑life situations — including ordering food and drinks in French cafés and shops. This hands‑on task not only boosted their confidence but also showed them how rewarding it can be to communicate in another language. The trip offered unforgettable memories, strengthened friendships, and gave our pupils a deeper understanding of French culture, all while bringing their classroom learning to life in the most meaningful way.
